Harahan is a small city within Jefferson Parish in southern Louisiana. This city sits on what was once part of the Soniat Plantation. It was exceptional for raising cattle and farming as it is almost similar in shape to a peninsula. This allows minerals to be deposited at a greater amount when water rises. Before the Huey P. Long Bridge was built, Harahan remained one of the very few spots that railcars could cross the Mississippi River. Here, the world's three largest barges would transport rail cars across the river. During World War II, Camp Plauche was built in current Elmwood. This would become home to Freiburg Mahogany, who would produce important boat and aircraft parts for the war. With all the diverse economic attention, this area grew quickly, with new homes and the population boomed. After the war, Harahan continued to grow and made subsequent changes to accomodate the booming population. 

Today, the area houses over 9,000 people and provides quick and east access to the city of New Orleans.
